Dhi Ain Village (thi ain ancient village ) it is also known as Aqaba al-Baha. The 400 year old village was not easy to locate, we have to pass through 25 tunnels at 8,200 ft above sea level to get into al- baha. On top of that, due to numerous spellings we can’t google the place correctly. We have to go to Golden Tulip Hotel to asked for the direction. The scenery along the road was spectacular. There were few view deck along the area where you can stop and take pictures.
built 400 years ago on a small marble mountain
Before reaching this place, we have seen ruins of abandoned stones and slate towers along the way. It’s amazing to see how the stones were arranged.
We left our hotel early morning and we can’t just pass through without taking pictures. It was all foggy ,breezy but not so cold at this time.
It’s a long winding road but its worth seeing the place specially we have a week Eid holiday. Though we were not able to see forest garden, we have seen few green bushes, banana ,olive, flowers along the area.
At first when I heard from my son, Chef Kevin, he wanted to see the Fish Auction in Honolulu, I was bewildered! There’s a lot of scenic tours around the island why at the Pier 38?
4 Am mom!
What? Why? Are we going on fishing? Are we selling fish? Why 4 am?
Do we have to take part in auction?
What about the smell?
Well, this is his holiday gift so I just went along with the idea. We woke up at 4:30 and was at Pier 38 5:30 am, the auctions starts at 6 am. Thought provoking? Yes! you can say that again, a lot of things in my mind 🙂 Anyhow , as I see the excitement on his eyes , I begun to feel excited too!
nice smile!
a groupie selfie 🙂
To my surprise, the place is clean and I hardly smell the fishes. Before going in, we passed through a small board with water ( i’m assuming it is mixed with disinfectant) . I noticed a small portion of the fish tail is cut off and I learned later that it was done to show the color of the meat i.e.: bright red is fresh, streaks of white indicates high fat content and if brown, oxygenation has taken place. Would you still buy it? The guide said, are you going to eat it raw? or are you going to cook it? It depends 🙂
a small piece of meat is cut off from the tail to show the freshnessThis is me just goofing around..
Why are we wearing headset? Well, with all the people around trying to bid, it would be hard for us to listen to the guide. The auction is done like in the wall street trade but instead of suits, hand gestures and screaming, auctioneers are in jackets and boots, quickly moves in rows of fish and speaks in steady fast manner.
The most common is yellow fin tuna and big eye tuna, but they also have opa – moon fish
Well, I’m happy that I went along with chef Kevin’s idea. I enjoyed the tour as well. And here are the few things I learned:
-Tuna contains the mineral selenium (selenoneine) which is antioxidant and together binds with the mercury which lowers the risk of mercury-related problem. When we eat tuna we likely get the same antioxidant protection.
-Interesting to note, and tricky too :0 Tuna has a higher mercury content than other fishes so it was advise pregnant women should avoid eating it, but other researches shows when pregnant women eats more tuna, the kids are more smarter.
-Hawaiian name for big-eye tuna- (Ahi) yellow fin, blue fin (maguro)
After the tour, we had breakfast at Nico’s Pier 38
I enjoyed the tour as well 🙂 I had a better idea of what is going on in an auction like this. I also have a better appreciation of the fishermen and the chefs who have gone through fish searching , so we can savour the menu on the table.
My food adventures with Chef Kevin and my photographer Edge (though all photos here are mine😊) continues on. The beauty of being with them is …I got to try different menu and also learn new things, forget about putting on additional weight, it’s holiday time!
Today lunch choice: Japanese shabu shabu
I would say, so far this is the best hot pot I have tried in LA. The soup base even though it is spicy, i can still savour its tastes, so yummy!
well, is it obvious that I love shrimps😍
Chef Kevin says: put noodles at the last part!
why?
Because after putting all the meat, vegetables and sea food, the broth or soup takes in all the flavor and of course noodles will absorb all the flavors too!
love it! and I don’t mind to come back again in this restaurant. The price is also reasonable for ” eat all you can” hot pot.
This is our first family trip, a real holiday because my first son recently graduated and my youngest son have just finished his management training and I , of course took a break off from my hectic schedule.
So this is it…beautybeyondfifty updating from Los Angeles California😊
picking up my youngest from Catalina Express!
tsukemen
Ladies, this is the funny thing😊 I ordered this tsukemen with a soup on the side not knowing that i should dip the noodles (no wonder its cold) into the hot soup hahaha
a series of food adventure like what happened on my stop over in London, trying Ramsay Gordon plane food, ordering burger and peroni. looking at the glass like it’s a beer, I asked the waiter, did i ordered this?
yes mam its peroni! oh I didn’t know peroni is a beer😜
When we got our ticket to Polynesian Cultural centre though online, we thought 11:45 am was too early to go ahead so, we went to drive route highway 72 (Kalaniana’ole highway) passing thru the spectacular view of Hanauma bay to Waimanalo Beach, Kailua beach to Kamehameha highway. It took us 1 hour and 20 minutes of OMG views 🙂
waimanalo beach
counterclockwise because a night before ,we passed through this area and yet we got lost in the morning hahaha well, not really, we were just overwhelmed with the views, decided to get out of the car and tried to sink in once more the beauty of nature!
By the time we reached the Polynesian cultural centre , we have missed some of the shows already but we had a very enjoyable fun time the rest of the day.
First stop : the Canoe pageant, a show case of musician and dancers representing stories of different Islands of Aotearoa,Samoa,Tonga,Tahiti, Fiji and Hawaii.
TAHITI
SAMOA
AOTEAROA (New Zealand)
FIJI
second stop: the island of Tonga, this is where.. lol! laugh out loud. Don’t miss this show or you will miss the fun. Three men from the audience was called on stage to demonstrate the rhythm of oversized drum, a hilarious fun of learning in front of so many spectators, but oh boy! they did great and was on game every minute :-). You have to see it to enjoy them!
Next..The Tahiti wedding..love this! it started from the day they met.. to engagement and the wedding. During the ceremony, married couples (from the audience)were asked to say their vows once again. This is sweet 🙂
We also went to Fiji and Hawaii island, learnt something about the hula dance, their cultures and stories. I was not able to take pictures because I choose to just watch and listen. Good idea? well, it depends, if I’m writing a blog I should have at least document what I saw to share it!
Anyhow, after which ..dinner ! The Ali ‘i Luau is the Hawaii’s largest and most authentic Luau, set against the backdrop of waterfalls and lush garden. It features dancers, musicians, fresh flower lei for each guest.
After dinner, we went to Cinema presentation ” Hawaiian journey” a tribute to the splendours of Hawaii. At night,we watched the most awaited show “Ha’ the breath of life” a stunning show full of dancers and it showcase the saga of life from birth to death, love and family, triumph and tragedy. At the beginning, I was skeptic, it’s like a broadway show narrowed to just storytelling which made us sleepy at some point but at the latter part, we were brought to life when the thrill of Samoa fire knife dancing started. Photography was not allowed, I guess this is better, so I was really into the show, not taking pictures 🙂
Ladies, my Oahu escapades was one of so many memorable journey of my life. I won’t hesitate to travel once more to this places and who knows? Maybe one day I will have the chance to live and experience life like the locals in Hawaii. 🙂
Dreams do come true and beautybeyondfity believe so..
A drive past Hanauma bay and Sandy beach, the Makapu’u point State Wayside Park, is a roadside park with magnificent view of Ka-iwi State scenic shoreline and Mañana Island (rabbit Island).
panoramic view of shoreline
Though there was a drizzle of rain from time to time, it didn’t stop us (and a lot of tourist too!) from getting out of the car .The sky was so blue and the view was spectacular, how can you stay in the car?
Makapu’u beach
again, we’re here just to see the view and we didn’t even took the Makapu’u light house trail!
tsk! tsk! there’s a lot to see ..a lot of things to do ..no time to see it all and do 🙂
a distant view of the rabbit island. does it really look like a rabbit head?
a closer view of rabbit island
Makapu’u s lighthouse from a fara closer view of the lighthouse built in 1909 on a 600 foot sea cliff overlooking Makapu’u beach
We went down to have a closer look of the beach and have seen a lot of like.. lava rocks and tide pools where tiny fishes and crabs got stuck in between during low tides.
Ladies, here’s my picture once again with an open arms.. just one way of saying..
be free!
Life is beautiful to hold on to whats bringing you down.
Another day to explore, another OMG! :-0 I can’t refrain from saying the word “nice” every-time we got out for a ride and explore the island.
Again, we didn’t catch up with sunrise and I don’t think will ever be 🙂
Though we arrived early, we didn’t go down to snorkel. Hanauma Bay is great for snorkelling. It is sheltered from strong currents and waves. People starts to come as early as 6 in the morning.
Under the tire of one the cars parked in the area, I’ve seen two small creatures fast-moving around. It was not easy to take the shots but I tried. These small animals are called Mongoose known also by its Hawaiian name of ‘lole manakoke.
Hanauma Bay Nature preserve and Beach park is 30 minutes drive from Waikiki
I have settled not to go down because of the spectacular view on the top. So beautiful, so blue and green.. so refreshing..
Even the grass flowers are so stimulating..
I took 3 shots and didn’t use filter to alter the background. It’s really beautiful!
Ladies, this place is amazing, I definitely would love to come back and try to bring our own snorkelling gadget, see the under the sea creatures and not the mongoose 😉
Of course..underwater camera here we go 🙂 .. beautybeyondfifty will research on the best waterproof camera. Any recommendation?
