  • Taif through the eyes of Nanay Aurea

    taif1

This is also Β Nanay Aurea first road trip outside Jeddah. Our plan was just to have an early sunrise breakfast to our favourite “sand dune” but decided to go further and have lunch At Al Shifa mountain.

A breezy morning to unwind, as we ascended to the mountain, Nanay aurea was quiet for some time, wondering whether the road has an end. At times, she asked questions like..why there are so many tires on the road? In the Philippines old car tires can be reuse and recycle to a flower pot holder, a swing ,chairs and table etc.She was murmuring “marami nang manginginabang sa atin nito” a lot of people will earn from these old tires. In unity, we all nodded our heads.

Once we passed by police check point, she readily took out her passport and got worried that her visa is only in Jeddah πŸ™‚ to our amusement we told her, her deportation back home is imminentΒ πŸ™‚ hehehe of course not!

Her amazement of how the road was constructedΒ Β echoed onΒ how Β hard it is for her to relate the story to her friends back home. πŸ™‚ me too Nanay Aurea ..I share your sentiments πŸ™‚ I took a lot of pictures and I can’t decide which one to upload. Alas! I choose candid street photos! Alright friends..don’t roll your eyes on me!

Oh! before I forget, what was the comment of Nanay Aurea on grilled chicken?

“amoy arabo ang chicken”..the chicken smells like the arab guy who was selling it πŸ™‚ in fairness..the taste was superb! not the guy..the grilled chicken o la la πŸ™‚

  • Weekend At Rabigh -Saudi Arabia

I haven’t posted my Dubai trip last week yet, yes! I was out of Jeddah, KSA again..hurray! It is always a treat to be out of this shell, Oh how I wish it will be forever!

    2014-11-21 at 11-23-36

Anyhow, my friends and I were planing a weekend trip for a long time now, so even though I just came back from Dubai and needed a rest, I didn’t miss this happening! And I was right! This place is awesome as if we’re not in Saudi Arabia. And to be surrounded with friends is a bonus in itself!

    2014-11-21 at 11-34-58

We left Jeddah late at night and woke up early to catch the sunrise at the beach. I learnedΒ the coconut trees were taken from the Philippines, great!

The place is so serene, as if the place was reserve for us only. there was a couple of families fishing along the edge and a few women who are still wearing their abaya, strolling along the beach.

    Ladies,

” One of the most beautiful qualities of true friendship is to understand and to be understood ”

    – Lucius Annaues Seneca

Thank you so much my friends.

and at midnight receiving a call from my sons and read this message:

    ..
Thanks for everything. Thanks for being a great parent no matter how rebellious i become. I like to believe that your level of understanding is better than anyone. Your wisdom matches no other. Even my own. My “smart know it all” version. You have carried kuya and i’s dreams so far. I just wanted to let you know on this special day that. Youve known that i always hated the idea of looking up to someone. But i would like to let u know that you have set the example so high there is no one else other than you to look up to. I was never great at getting gifts for you so yea.
Thanks for all the love and support. Even on your birthday i can only remember all the great gifts you have given me.
I know i don’t show it much but thanks for being a great parent/friend. I hope all the people you have cared for through these years have given you one amazing day.
Happy birthday and much love to you.—–

You bet..welling up till morning..so much happiness and blessings. Thank you Lord.

  • Home baked Cheesecake Challenge : Flavour #41 Dates and walnut Cheesecake

The end is near for the last 10 flavours of Β Cheesecake Challenge! Countdown begins now…

Flavour #41 Dates and walnut Cheesecake (food for the gods)

    2014-09-05 at 15-05-48

Huh! What a way to start the countdown.. cheesecake for the gods πŸ™‚ this recipe is a combination of dates, walnut and cheese for which it is commonly called ” food for the gods”. I am not sure why and how the cake got its name but let me guess. Dates and walnuts are not common in the Philippines, hence, it’s quite expensive to make it.Gods, may denote rich and famous people. Back then, It was only for the rich and famous who can afford to have this kind of cake, middle class people tried to have it at least during special occasion like Christmas. Well, this is my theory of how this cake got the name” food for the Gods”. Am I making sense?

Alright let’s add cheese to the lavish and rich ingredients of this cake, tailored for the King and Queen as well hahaha, kidding aside, this cheesecake is deliciously rich! Try it and maybe you might say, its heaven! πŸ™‚

Flavour # 41 Dates and walnut Cheesecake
Flavour # 41 Dates and walnut Cheesecake

Saudi Arabia is the homeland of Date palm trees. It is a must to break their fast during Ramadan with dates and water. There are about 300 types of dates in Saudi Arabia. Oh! let’s not get into detail, let’s bake cheesecake!

  • Born in Jeddah..What is your Native language?

    Peace begins with a smile..
    Peace begins with a smile..

I was talking to a friend last night about children who was born outside the Philippines with a Filipino parents and speaks fluent English but have difficulty in speaking our very own language “Tagalog”. He was very passionate discussing his views that our conversation lasted for three hours OMG! nosebleed πŸ™‚

    English or Tagalog

Why do you think mostly of Filipino children born outside the Philippines speak English more than Tagalog?

Why do we have to speak English at home? Why do we encourage them to speak English only at home and not our own Language? Isn’t it that they are learning English at school? With their friends?… after all, they live outside Philippines and the common Language is English!

Who is a better teacher in English, the teacher whose native Language is English? or the Filipino parents whose native Language is Tagalog?..so why not speak Tagalog at home? Don’t you think you are rubbing them off of the opportunity to be bilingual?

    Universal Language

First of all, English is a universal Language, it is a common knowledge ..if children speak English fluently, they will have an edge to those who does not..they have a better opportunity to find a job and a better interaction to people around the world.

    Guilty as Charged

I can only speak for myself, I am guilty as charged of not speaking Tagalog at home with my sons while they were growing up, not because we lost our patriotism or I didn’t think they are smart enough to be bilingual but because my priority for them is to speak English fluently… yes they learned English at school but practicing at home will also help.Thank goodness, they didn’t acquire my Filipino English accent! πŸ™‚ notΒ that it is wrong to acquire it but my philosophy is.. you have to learn it the right way!

For awhile, I have to agree that it was a struggle for my eldest son not to speak Tagalog fluently, he lost his own identity in his own birth place because he does not speak Tagalog but eventually he did learned the Language. It would have been better if I taught him myself,.. moving on…it was a blessing that he speaks both English and Tagalog and a bit of Arabic as well.

    Native Language

My youngest son, was born in Jeddah obviously his first Language is English, should I say his native language is Tagalog?

What is native Language? a Language a child learned first at home versus a language learned later in life.

but because he was born to a Filipino parents, he also learned how to speak tagalog though not as fluent as he speaks English. He only goes home to Philippines once a year just for a short holiday and not totally emerged to the Filipino culture. He was born in Jeddah but did not acquired the Saudi culture instead he was exposed to a multi cultural environment which gave him the benefits of interacting/learning different culture which help him to be a well- rounded person, of not being judgemental of others belief, attitude and behaviour. I am so proud to say he is now multi lingual (English,Tagalog,Arabic,German, French) and holds a very high interpersonal and social skills which will lead him to better path in a near future.

I say his native Language and primary Language is bilingual, English and Tagalog.

He might not be as proficient or as fluent in Tagalog but he can understand and able to appropriately response back.

    My verdict?

There is nothing wrong in speaking English at home as long as the child knows he can also speak and understand Tagalog. It is not about patriotism because English is widely used as a form of communication in and out of the country. It helps to identify you as a Filipino but it doesn’t defines who you are!

What is wrong then?..if you imposed or encouraged not to speak Tagalog at all!

” Learn English well and connect to the world. Learn Filipino well and connect to our country. ” – (Aquino 2010)

    I rest my case πŸ™‚ πŸ˜‰

Ladies, feed me up, I like to hear from you πŸ™‚

    Cheers,

    Jamilamimi
