  • Road trip day 3: Catanduanes Twin Rock beach

    2014-04-14 at 11-10-00

Here we go again, rain or shine… we love to go to the beach! hahaha as if there are other things to do than beach hopping in the island of Virac, Catanduanes, Philippines.  Eating? surfing? bonding? drinking? We can all do that in the beach!

From our house, it took only about 40 minutes ride by car or motorbike to reach the place (barrio Igang). The entrance fee were counted per person, the cottage was rented by day and my nephew rented a small bungalow (air-conditioned) to stay overnight. Swimming pool is also available but with extra charge.

Grilled pork chop! Hmmm forget about diet, this is so yummy 🙂

The sun was still up when we arrived but after an hour or so, the rain started and I was not able to take a good picture of the place. I don’t have protection for my camera lens which gave me an excused… to enjoy the scenery and ate with gusto 🙂

  • Road Trip Day 2: Batong Paluway

    2014-04-10 at 09-11-35

To reach the province of Virac, Catanduanes,it’s a choice of either air or land/sea transportation. The plane usually takes less than an hour from Manila via Cebu Pacific. By land, it takes about 10-12 hours and another 3 – 3 1/2  hours in a ferry boat depending where it dock  at the port of Virac or port of Calolbon.

While waiting for my brother to arrive at the port of Calolbon, we decided to visit Batong Paluway.

Batong Paluway is a “mysterious miracle stone” bearing the image of Immaculate Virgin Mary. It was told that the previous size of the stone is 3/4 cm x 1cm and grew to 6cm x8cm. On Good Friday of Holy week, the youth usually organised  “alay lakad” as an offer of sacrifice, the walk starts from Virac town proper to Calolbon where the Batong Paluway Church is located.

  • Scared of MERS -I travelled via Etihad Airways on Pearl Business Class

A week or two before his birthday, my father had suffered a mild stroke. I immediately decided to visit him. Before the announcement of an outbreak of MERS in Saudi Arabia, I already purchased an economy ticket going to Philippines via Etihad Airways.

MERS – Middle East Respiratory Syndrome is a viral respiratory illness caused by Coronavirus. It was first reported in 2012 in Saudi Arabia. It has been said that it likely came from animal sources like camel in Qatar and a bat in Saudi Arabia. It can be spread from one infected person to another person.

April 7, 2014 my flight From Jeddah to Abu Dhabi (Economy Class) and From Abu Dhabi to Manila (Business Class). For all OFW (Overseas Filipino Workers) who have had experienced travelling in economy class, with different nationalities, different cultures, different hygiene practice…people who spit in public, sneeze /cough with gusto without covering their mouth without even considering they can spread the microbes (bacteria) to other people, this in particular is the menace of travelling.

To make the story short, I had the chance to experience travelling in business class when they offered me(via e-mail) to bid on the seat. It was a relief  not to hassle, to wait in VIP lounge, a choice of complimentary delectable cuisine and even a free 15 minutes massage is available.

6 ft 1 inch Flat bed

I apologize for the not so clear pictures but one thing I can surely say, the pictures in their websites and its functions are all true.

I had the same opportunity in coming back, scared of the MERS cases escalating in Saudi Arabia,I braced myself of some precautions because I was already feeling tired from travelling, my body were aching and just to have a comfortable flight will add some relaxation and will at least minimise my contacts to other passengers.

So after 12 hours and the plane had touchdown in Jeddah,Saudi Arabia, I noticed redness and warmness in my face and neck. I also have difficulty of swallowing due to sore throat. After I reached home, I immediately freshened and concluded that I might be having allergy so I took antihistamine tablet. I felt asleep for maybe an hour and when I woke up, the redness and swelling were more than usual, my eyes were puffy and half closed. I went to Emergency room(ER) , history was taken while taking the vital signs and Allerfin intramuscular injection STAT!

no diarrhoea, no difficulty of breathing and slightly elevated body temperature (37.9 C) definitely no MERS!!

I went home but after 12 hours I am back again in the ER, this time my whole body, extremities were all red, my face and neck were more swollen and red, so another injection was given, CBC (complete blood count) and antibiotic treatment was started right away.

Tentative diagnosis: Viral Exanthem?/ Scarlet fever

After 4 days, the rashes and swelling started to disappear, my sore throat is less and I started to enjoy my meal. The CBC result is with in normal limits and I am back to work. 🙂

Thank you Lord, it wasn’t MERS!

Did the business class seat helps? I guess it minimises the contact to other passengers, did I mentioned Sarah Geronimo (popular Filipina singer) and her mother was a just a seat away? 🙂 If I was in the economy seat, with my low resistance to infection, it might have been worse.

Overall, the upgraded seat, the additional cost is worth having. Thank you Etihad Airways!

    Cheers!

  • Sand dune – Jeddah Saudi Arabia

    DSC_0241

The most visited place in Jeddah – Sand dune!

We left our home as early as 5:30 am, to catch the sunrise, unfortunately we didn’t reach on time.

We stop along the area, to buy tamis ( a big round bread)and foul (made of fava beans) for breakfast, we ate it as fast as the sun rises above us.

    DSC_0007

As soon as we arrived, I got ready with my camera, there’s not much to shoot anyway, it’s all sands but I tried to make it more interesting ( I hope so 🙂 )

and some of our actions shoot!

  • The Tent City – Rabigh Saudi Arabia

Eid holiday, the last official holiday for this year (2013). We decided just to drive around and let our mood take us to to wherever …whenever…oh well, Rabigh, an ancient area west of Saudi arabia is not a bad choice after all. We have found the “tent city” owned privately by the locals. We have gathered , some of the tent are also for rent, if the owner are out of the city.

I was able to get a few shots of how the tents looks like inside.

A portable bathroom was also installed in each of the tent, a satellite and their own generator to pump electricity.

The night was cool, wind blowing and the group enjoyed the night.

  • Sleepless in Seattle has been retold otherwise

    seattle-42a

“Destiny is something we’ve invented because we can’t stand the fact that everything that happens is accidental” from 1993 movie – Sleepless in Seattle.

From Jeddah to London to Seattle is 17.5 hrs. flight. It is my first time in Seattle, as usual before I travel, I did some research about where are the best places to go, hence I’ll be coming to attend an annual conference of American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) my time is a bit constraint. Really? ??

Nope! For those who knew me, you can’t keep me from roaming around and taking photographs. So here’s my bucket list (before touch down) Of course, I expected that “Sam”will be there with a yellow tulips in his hand, with an open arms and wide smile on his lips, waiting patiently , Ohh “Annie” I miss you so much!,,, Dream on! 🙂

Seattle has music history of each own so Jazz club is on my list, Symphony orchestra and Paramount theater, yes! I heard New Jersey boys are performing. What about a dinner in Revolving restaurant on top of the Space needle instead of Empire state building where “Sam and Annie ” met. I love “sunset”what about a dinner cruise with a little of dancing.Or just an afternoon stroll along Kubota Garden.Oh no! what about the Tulip festival? Let’s twist (for lack of a better word) the story of Sam and Annie.

There was no Sam, no flower and definitely no cab waiting, She was alone, checking in at Sheraton Hotel, the afternoon was breezy, decided to stroll downtown and the first destination was Public Market, romantic isn’t it?

seattle-12aPike Place fish market where fishmongers throw fish and visitors had fun! It would be more fun if Annie kissed the fish and  wallah!  prince charming “Sam” appeared with a bouquet of tulips in his hand. Well. Sam was nowhere near, but  there was music everywhere and there is even the fat pig looking at you, inviting to save some pennies for the sake of community market. Obviously, along the area was a lined up of seafood restaurant, forget the revolving restaurant in the bucket list…, this is real! Cracking the crabs with a wooden hammer, scooping the meat out and dipping it to a lemon sauce, hmmmm yummmy! And suddenly Sam hands, swell in red whoa!, allergy?? there goes Annie’s seafood cravings..:-)

Moving on…Prince Sam has no intention of being romantic, they continued to stroll, explore the places and alas! decided to go on cruise on broad daylight, what’s in the list?? sunset cruise with dinner and dance, hahahaha you’re not lucky Annie. He is  not in his sweet mood!

The cruise connects the salt water of Puget sound and the fresh water of Lake union. Would Annie brings freshness to the salty life of Sam?

Let’s try one more time to be romantic.. yey! Hope in to Seattle monorail to an elevated glide to downtown Seattle,Chihuly garden and glass art  work… to a  spectacular 360 degree view of Puget sound from space needle, and finally lunch at the skycity revolving restaurant, having buttered fresh salmon on the plate and the famous Lunar orbiter dessert…hurray at last  one of Annie’s bucket list is on!

Well, I guess Sam wakes up finally, took Annie to Music Experimental Project where live band plays to the tune of 80’s but Annie was just a fresh maiden who can dance the night away took Sam by surprise and poor guy, a few steps on the right and left, a little of back and sides steps, hands up and down and finally the night is over.

And so the story is short leaving the reader to make a conclusion of their own just like how the movie ends in “Sleepless Seattle”.
