Dubai Food trip with Chef Kevin – Katsuya and Teavana (Day 1)

Yes! I’m back to Dubai to attend Facial-Cosmetic Dentistry conference at Jumeirah Beach hotel.

I arrived a day early for the conference, checked-in to City Premier Hotel Apartment, this time our room got upgraded to premier deluxe, a bigger room and a huge balcony overlooking Dubai skyline.

My Chef Kevin has been sick for two days before I arrived but he managed to be with me and even went for a dinner!

We went to Katsuya, oh yes! another Japanese food, my chef kevin definitely made my palate accustomed to Japanese cuisine, I can now savour every sushi in the table. hahaha I must admit, I’m not a great fan of sushi before!

We wanted to see the best view of the terrace so we waited for a while to get the seat. We went to Teavana for him to drink ginger tea for his sore throat. What a display of tea pot!

At last , we got the seat, it wasn’t the best but at least we got the view of Dubai fountain.

Dubai,UAE Food Trip with Chef Kevin (day 4) at Nobu

My last night in Dubai … I can’t leave without even trying to see Atlantis The palm Dubai, unfortunately our reservation was already late in the evening. It took us about 40 minutes drive from the city premier to Atlantis. the driver dropped us a bit far from the entrance of the hotel and just imagine wearing high heels walking through the pavement, huh! the next time oh yeah there will be next time 😉 save it to the last…keeping my fingers crossed! ain’t gonna ride with you,no more driver!

Chef Kevin choose “Nobu”, just for bit of information Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa is a celebrity chef known for his fusion cuisine blending traditional Japanese dishes with South american ingredients.

Just look at the face of my Chef Kevin, smiling from ear to ear, oh! it’s great to see him very happy after working 12 hours. I  wish that my eldest son Edge was also with us. We invited his friend Kary to join us too, so I got two dates at one night 😉

Dubai,UAE food trip with Chef Kevin (day 3)

We started the morning with a breakfast in La farine at JW Marriott Marquis Hotel, joining us.. is the eldest daughter of my consultant and her husband. It’s been three years since I attended their wedding. It was great seeing them.

La farine is 24/7 cafe & bakery and I took fancy of the mirrors on the wall, If I count it all.. it will total into 247 mirrors according to #fact friday of JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai. Interesting!

Chef Kevin has to work on that day so I spent the day at the largest shopping mall in the world …Dubai mall. I went to spa for an hour.. had full body massage and Yes! ladies I did some shopping but I must say, being a single provider, I got to be stingy this time… not enough budget to spend 😉

The mall was crowded with different people from different countries which is visible by the clothes they wear. It was like attending a United nation day celebration!

I spent a lot of time taking photos of the amazing waterfall adorned with fibreglass statue of human divers. It runs through the entire height of the mall. I started from the top to the bottom (1st to 4th level). Whew! that was a good exercise ! that’s what I needed…before I dive into another food trip with Chef Kevin 😉

Dubai,UAE Food Trip with Chef Kevin (day 2)

Friday brunch at Kitchen 6, JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai..what an awesome experience! Chef Kevin and I choose once more to dine at JW Marriott, His work starts at 2 in the afternoon and we invited his cousins to join us for lunch so the choice was perfect!

Kitchen 6 is located at the first floor. We choose the place that was a bit far from the food tables so we had the chance to walk a bit far ,a chance to digest a bit and be ready with all the different cuisines. I just had my coffee early in the morning so I kind of ready to savour everything that was there…I wish !  The ambience was overwhelming and all that’s in there .. I felt my tummy was already satisfied by just looking at it 😉

Dubai,UAE – food trip with Chef Kevin (day 1)

I knew that I was planning for a holiday but I wasn’t sure if it will push through or not until, the last week before Eid Adha when suddenly my consultant asked – when are you leaving? who me?  Surprise ? yep! because a week ago when I was asking for a holiday, he was refusing to let me go and now, he is asking? I am a lucky lady!

Chef kevin and mom
Me and my Nomadic Chef

huh! yes this weekend! I readily got my ticket and confirmed my hotel booking. I was so excited, as far I can remember this will be my first time to go on holiday without a dental conference on the side. But I also knew , that this will be a fun holiday with a food trip ..yes! what else? If you remember well..our common ground is food 🙂 and with Chef Kevin, it’s not only food like eating in fast food restaurant but he likes to savour a real dish, if possible to go on fine dining restaurant. He is doing his culinary internship in JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai,UAE. Surely, this will be our first stop.

Did I stayed in the hotel? nope! I can’t afford it at the moment (both of my sons are still in College). I stayed at City Premier Hotel Apartment which is a very cozy place and about 20 minutes walk from his work. There are two supermarket on each side of the building, a pharmacy and salon spa nearby. It is also located near the business bay metro station.

After the sumptuous lunch, we went to “The Lounge” to get some green tea and macarons.

Before having dinner, we strolled along Dubai mall, I got fascinated by the high ceiling intricate light decor , here are some of my shots.

Outside the mall, between the man- made lake, the address hotel and the sight of burj khalifa, there’s a big fat horse, i would guess it is one of Fernando Botero art sculpture, who’s signature style of large and exaggerated volume can be seen.

Age 53 : From here to there, the chase never ends…

photoWho would have thought at fifty and beyond I still have dreams to chase?

Yes… I am a dreamer…a chaser of dreams… be of mine or my son’s dream.

When my youngest son’s decided to pursue his passion in Culinary in Switzerland, some of my friends raised their eyebrow to the tune of why???

Why in Switzerland? Why to spend a lot on just a Culinary course?

First of all, it is not a “just culinary course” it is a Bachelor’s degree, If he wants to be a chef..let it be, but I will support him to be the best of chef. His education and training in the best facilities and institution will surely give him an edge and a good foundation to begin with. I will give him that opportunity and the rest will follow.

Now, my eldest son wants to pursue his passion in photography, he already has a Bachelor’s degree in Multi Media (a hundred eyebrows raised) why??? he is officially enrolled in Santa Monica College in California, USA (another hundred eyebrows raised) why???

It’s all about love

I am not rich but I have profession that can support my son’s dream. I can buy my dream house and probably live like princess but I rather help build their future than build a big beautiful house. Education is the best lasting gift of love I can give to them.

During our years (not too long ago 🙂 ) we were taught: in order to succeed and be respected in society,we should pursue a degree like Engineering, nursing, medicine. Doing something you enjoyed or passionate about were not encourage or even discussed unless you were passionate about having MD or DMD at the end of your name.

A different approach

Thank goodness! Society had changed, colleges and universities offering more choices. Culinary and photography is now in demand courses. Money perhaps is one of the biggest factors that affects in choosing a career. But money will not give all the happiness if you are not passionate about your job. I am blessed to have chosen a career I am passionate about and at the same time, earned good money enough to send them to college.

Where to go from here

I am a registered Nurse, worked for a year but Dentistry is my passion…my dream. If my parents were not supportive, I wont be practicing Cosmetic Dentistry today. It wasn’t an easy journey, I have made a lot of bumps along the way but I was determined to follow my own map to reach my destination. Yes! a road map of where I want to be. It is like getting the entire tourist brochures, mapping out what I want to see, Where I want to go, calculating my time and money so I can enjoy the journey reach my destination and enjoy the place.

Don’t limit yourself, dream big

One day, I saw both of my sons mapping out the places they been to ( a lot of pins); who would not dream to see the world? I, too dream that one day, I will have the chance to see it all. Would it be great to make your own “map”of life? See where you are, decide where to go and pin your course? Don’t limit yourself; consider all areas of your life: relationships, financial, professional, physical and spiritual health.

” If you can’t dream or envision it, you probably won’t be able to have it.”

Try to envision your path, what kind of life are you heading at? What it feels like? What challenges? What do I want to experience? Dream a lot…dream big! The “what”would lead you to “why”and “how”will follow. Knowing the reasons why will lead you to better accomplish the “how”.

Giving them the opportunity to study abroad is my dream and we shared the same dream, then why to limit it? Their father’s dream is to have a business of his own and he did it! He wanted them to have a business of their own too, yes! why not? But they should have that dream too! Owning that dream will let them accomplish something on their own. What about when I got old or got sick? Who would take care of the rest? Honestly, I don’t think of that scenario because when I dream, positivism comes within.

” It’s my road map..Want it,dream it,live it! “

Never ending chase

I remember the old days, when my youngest son was in the toddler stage and the eldest was only ten yrs old (their father was out of the country, looking for a greener pasture) the elder one could barely carry the groceries bag and the younger one was running around, chasing other babies of his age. I have to hold his hand and my other hand is holding the rest of the groceries bag while keeping an eye to the elder one too. The days that I have to chase them while making pasta for dinner or running away from taking a bath, oh! I miss those days too! And when they turned to adolescent, I got to follow-up where they are, what time they are coming home, who are with them etc. And now that they are grown up and we are all in different part of the world, I go to chase them too, travelling to Europe and USA while working in the Middle East. Huh! come to think of it, my dream of seeing the world comes true!

So ladies, you can now put your eyebrows down, the chase is on… Dream big, take the challenge and hit it!
