  • Hot to breeze to chill : Atlanta Georgia (part two)

From Saudi Arabia  to Atlanta , Georgia , a distinct contrast from hot to breeze, I came 8:30 in the evening, shops close at nine so I hurried up to check if I can find a decent top to wear the following morning. I decided to wear a white top with my black blazer and jeans and my strappy flat open toe sandals, as i mentioned earlier, things happens, you just have to be comfortable with whatever you wear and have some poised and you will be fine.

open toe sandal- i always travel in flat comfortable foot wear

The first thing I noticed in Atlanta are the people, largely African-Americans, but don’t get me wrong, they are very polite and well-mannered. From the taxi driver to the hotel people and to the professionals, they are respectful and polite. In contrast to the taxi driver of Jeddah and to the other people i have met along the way, sometimes they just don’t know how to be nice in some ways.

I came to Atlanta for an advance Aesthetic training in Botox and Filler which i already discussed on my earlier blog.

So , let’s go on with my escapades in Atlanta, It has a reputation as a ” city in a forest” indeed! a lot of  trees around, the environment is so green and a lot of high-rise buildings too.Every corner has a touch of arts and crafts, museum and garden.

    bank of america plaza

The tallest building is Atlanta’s Bank of America Plaza (55 story; rank as 42nd tallest building in the world).

I only have a half day to tour around and then travel to another state for another dental meeting, so I brave the rain showers that never stop since the day I came.

coca cola samples from different countries

I was able to see the World of coca-cola museum, taste the different coca cola of the world, around 6o of them, so when i came out I got a bloated tummy and ready to fart  ha ha ha .

    world of coca cola

I wonder why Philippines doesn’t have its own coca cola drink?

The Worlds’ largest indoor Aquarium with 8 millions gallons of  fresh and marine water ,of course a lot more to see, I remember my kids (now, they are taller and bigger than us) the big eyes , the smile and excitement in their faces is more than what we can ask for.

It’s Monday but still the aquarium was full of tourist and students on tour.I walk through the Centennial Olympic park to have a glimpse of  Turner CNN building. Unfortunately , i was not able to see the botanical garden of Atlanta

    which is close every Monday.

And of course, as ladies always do …Shopping! Atlanta has the biggest outlet of

signature clothes, I was able to visit..take note only visit as in window shopping… 🙂

Lenox square, a luxury retails of Calvin Klein, Zara,Hermes etc. My wish and your wish..let me guess..are all the same. cheers!

  • Friday the 13th: Hot to breeze to chill! (part one)

    American AIrlines

May 13,2011 Friday. If you’re superstitious, I bet you won’t choose this day to travel because it holds to be the day of bad luck hmmm let me take you to my journey. As I was preparing to zip my luggage I was talking to my boss who doesn’t have any superstitious belief at all, his main concern is to keep the ball rolling on his side. “If anything happens to me, please take care of my children; give them what is due for my 24 years service in the clinic”. To make the story short, I’m off to airport at 6:30 in the morning. God forbid! I am ready to whatever comes to my way. Waiting to depart, I was invited to join (as a gold member of AA advantage) first class lounge, with free breakfast and Wifi ,ahhh  friday the 13th this is a good start!

Well, as always, I felt all eyes turned on me, what is she doing here? If you’re a Filipina working in Saudi Arabia, you know what I mean, the stigma attached to women…. it’s either you’re a Nurse or domestic helper…or you’re married to a foreigner, oh my! We’re already passed millennium that was then! Alright, as I moved my eyes, true! There’s a Filipina traveling with his foreigner husband on a seat not too far from me…there’s another two blond lady reading a novel and mostly are business men (on their best suit) either busy on their phone, reading newspaper or just engaged in a conversation with another man. Only a few second look and everyone is back into their own business.

On boarding, mostly of women still wears their abaya (a black robe we have to wear over our own clothes when were in public) as the plane (British Airways) takes off, abaya is off too. My flight is about six hours and forty-five minutes from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to London Heathrow. Heathrow is the busiest and biggest hub airport in UK, It has five terminals and I thought I have enough time to my connecting flight (AA –American Airlines) to Atlanta in terminal 5 to my dismay, there’s a long line for security purposes, they are scanning all passengers and hand carry baggage. The express train that will bring me to terminal 5 comes every 15 minutes and I have only 10 minutes left before boarding gate closes, Yes, Friday the 13th are you on me?? I approached the security and showed her my boarding pass and she called immediately the airlines to wait and Walla! I am on my way to Atlanta. If it wasn’t for her, I would have missed my first day of training.

It’s a nine hours flight from London to Atlanta…again a long line for security check but I was not worried this time because I have no connecting flight to catch on, as the immigration officer stamped my entry, I heard a call “Dr. Suarez please approached the customer service” now what??? Friday the 13th…come on…”Dr. Suarez, we’re sorry your baggage was left behind, we will deliver it to your Hotel tomorrow evening” Oh no! I only have my jeans and shirt and my training starts at 8:30 the following morning. I have extra shirt and underwear on my hand luggage but not decent clothes for my meeting. The officer handed me a debit card worth of US$50 (huh! What can I buy for 50?)Your guess is right; my next blog would be what to wear under such circumstances.

The weather is not as I expected, it’s breezy..a little rain shower along the way, as I went to my room and jump on to my bed, Friday the 13th was not so bad after all. I got my luggage after 36 hours of my arrival.

  • Dare to correct mom’s fashion?…NO way!

Have you ever look at the magazines how model looks like and dream that you look like them too? When was that? when you were 16? 20? 30? or maybe when you’re in 40’s! What about when you’re fifty and beyond? Oh my! My lips are sealed… but there are ladies who can still show off and doesn’t care what other people says! BE HAPPY! And there are ladies who still keep up their coca-cola bodies, why not? go for it! CHEERS! Of course, there are ladies who are not so lucky but still can pulled it off…it’s not magic but it’s POISED!

How about looking at the mannequin , it seems all clothes that’s on display looks fabulous! Indeed! The reasons it looks good on them…is because of their body and flawless skin. They are after all, mannequins!

    got my point?

I bought an exact pants and shirt that I found in “MANGO” catalog and tried the pose…., got my point? I know, you would say…you look fine!Really? ( i can see you laughing) NO… NO! I wont wear it like that, I won’t go out with my shirt tacked in my pants, otherwise, I’ll die because I’m holding my breath 🙂

I don’t know why “MANGO” jeans has no section for ladies beyond fifty, all jeans got low waist and hug on thighs. The roads are too lumpy and bumpy ,hellooo? What about the flair one? oh yeah, if you’re long-legged, maybe… or you can wear a high-heel shoes and it will look good too.

What about dress? Let’s try” CORTEFIEL”… I like their style, simple and yet elegant and comfortable too! Can beautybeyondfifty wears mini-skirt? How old is too old to wear mini-skirt? Does your knees stands the test of time? Have you noticed? if age doesn’t show on your face, it does show on other part of the body like… your neck…back of your hand …and your knees.

    I like White..simple!

I choose white dress, not too short and not too long, just a little bit above the knees. If you want to look casual but smart, try to match it with shoe wedges ..or if you want to look more business style, you can top it with a blazer or scarf and a closed high heel shoes, just be careful not to break your leg or your back.

Ladies, whatever you want to wear… be comfortable with it and your grace be with it, after all you deserve the best!

    ♥ ♥ ♥ HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL! ♥ ♥ ♥

  • I thought life would be cheaper when you’re fifty and beyond

    my golden year without shoes!

Does life gets better after you reach fifty and beyond? well, it depends, on how far you’ve been.ahhh, you can say that again!

I was filling up the form for our yearly medical insurance, as usual, name, date of birth, gender etc. the bracket of payment was at the end of the form. I always thought that I am fifty ( sorry ladies, i stop counting at age fifty).

    35-40 yrs. old (SR 1,149) 41-50 yrs. old (SR 1,349) 51-59 (Sr 2,649) 60-69(Sr 15,000)

Whoa! SR 2,649 for 51 yrs old and above! I thought when I reached fifty and beyond, I will have a discount but NO! your body will eventually be less resistant to sickness, not to mention the menopausal syndrome … thus need more medical attention and so your medical insurance increases in anticipation of this predicament.

I thought , I don’t care if my face has wrinkles, anyway, I am fifty and beyond but NO! looking at the mirror everyday makes you wonder, do I need a Botox? a filler? or a face lift? who cares!

I travel a lot and my suit case is full of clothes I need on every occasion, every weather, every conferences..so no need to buy stuff, but NO! It doesn’t fit anymore, I grew three sizes bigger..oh my! good thing my shoe size doesn’t change but NO! the style change, the fashion change..who cares!

My little handy bag used to have my lipstick, foundation, eyebrow pencil, mascara and lotion.Guess what’s the additional item? concealer! yes! to hide those dark circles around my eyes, sides of my nose and my dark pimples (which sometimes, let me feel I am still young! at least in my dreams! ha ha ha ha). What else? medicines! I have to add more medicines in my bag (headache, cramps, allergy, eye drop etc)

Eyeglasses! I have sunglasses, medical eye wear (i got two, one is spare just in case ..you know what I mean, beautybeyondfifty is getting old and forgetful)and not to mention, I have my loop too! Contact lens? no , I don’t wear one.

Gadgets! whoa, I used to have desk top computers only, but I needed a lap top so i can do my work at  home and at the office, clang! there goes another net book, easy to handle but got to have an extra hard disk..no no no still too heavy, i got an iPad so i can just put it in my everyday bag still not contented? here we go..iphone4, it goes to my purse easily ,ahhh do you think ,I wont carry my camera and MacBook air when I travel the next week? Think again! 🙂

My hair is turning grey…got to color it and made some high lights and low lights ahhhh additional expenses too! what else?

Oh well, got to park my pen, I won’t do anything at all if I find living expensive after all when you die, I guess its more expensive to buy a coffin and a place to bury the dead.

And so I therefore conclude, Life and living is still the best!

  • Just another day at the office “banana sex by tree”

Came to the office today expecting it to be the usual. The usual boring work i have to do. The usual boring people who are my office mates. although on occasion, the sight of one of them sleeping for most of the work hours, and the other playing games or watching tela novelas really crack me up.
After all it is supposedly an “advertising” company. Those two,no doubt can have a sitcom, and the rest of the office the supporting cast.
So around hmmm.. lets say 4pm.. I was just finishing a design up. only about the 23rd design or so. My boss in her own right is a character too. ” you don’t get what I want”. and her secretary trying to help me out ” at this point she doesn’t know what she wants, so just keep making designs. quantity over quality.” Again, this is an “advertising” company after all. So right about the time I got done, Ali ( not his real name of course.) walks and in a loud voice asks Manny (also not his name.hehe)” this banana sex by tree?” Ali asks in a loud voice.

“which one?” manny replies, apparently he has no clue what ali is talking about.

and at this point, im thinking, did i just hear that right? coz I wouldn’t know what ali would be talking about either. although, banana sex by tree… hmmm.. tree..bananas come from trees… so if banana sex by tree… incest??.
I did my best to hide my face. which by now is screaming to let out a laugh.

THIS banana sex by tree???” Ali pointing to a paper he was holding.

” ah, yes yes. sex by tree, sexy by tree this one” manny replies.

so after getting over the fact that they kept saying it that way. seriously, sex by tree. and apparently they were discussing this banana that was sex by tree. or more of arguing about it.

I knew it was an accent thing. the pronunciation and all. Ali being of middle eastern origin. and Manny, of course being a pinoy. and if u don’t get it yet. since this is an “advertising” company. what Ali was saying, was ” this banner six by three?”.

but still even though i knew what he really meant. i just couldn’t help it. really that was the only highlight today at the office. and u don’t get many of those where i work at.heheh. so i take it whenever i get it. heheh.

i thought for certain that manny would have at least said six instead of sex. but it turns out. they understood each other well.

so i guess, my day at the office wasnt all that bad. thanks to Ali and Manny.hehehe.

oh thru out this whole time, lets call him, Boy. Boy was smacking his computer. literally smacking it upside the cpu.lol. and cursn at the same time.

“taena naman toh! ba’t ayaw gumana, cra nlang lagi! putang ina!” Boy says with conviction.

i dunno kuya boy. maybe if u stop smacking it and just gently push the on button. but its ok. way to go! thats what u call. thinking outside the box! we are after all in …. an “advertising” company.

    read em and weep!

  • Ladies behind: Inihaw Kamayan Grill Resto

Inihaw Kamayan Grill House Restaurant in Balad (old town ) Jeddah, managed and partly owned by Filipino OFW. Some of the owners are my acquaintances and the ladies (gina, dong, thess, jo) behind are my friends and one of them Jo Imperial is my colleague in dental profession. She also has a talent in fruit carving.

"Ladies" of Inihaw kamayan Grill house Restaurant

My eldest son was invited to take some photos and as usual, I tag along together with my youngest son. I took some shots behind the scenes too!

This is very promising restaurant, the place can accommodate around 100 guest (maximum) and can be arranged accordingly. The foods are combination of Chinese, Filipino and Japanese dishes. Though we were not able to taste the Japanese, maybe one day, we will try it too!

Some of my favorite dishes includes: kare-kare, laing (with hot chili pls!) and sizzling sisig.

Well, you know, we can’t eat that much, we’re on diet…depends actually ..it could be full diet or balanced diet or no diet! ha ha ha ha…

Ahhhh I love the halo-halo…maybe just once a month wont hurt the diet plan!

thank you ladies! Keep up the good work!

  • My Lady teacher: Priscila Arcilla de Leon

I have known my fourth lady for a long time but we really didn’t have any intimate conversation, until I called her for the photo shoots.I am glad that I did this interview and with the previous ladies and 46 more to come. I am grateful for the time we have shared our thoughts for a lot of topics ,only ladies can relate (hopefully, men do relate too).

    PRISCILA A. de LEON

My lady teacher is Priscila Arcilla De leon, born January 16, 1955 in Tondo, Manila. Married to her long time college sweetheart, Delfin de Leon blessed with four children, Derrick, Dondee, Danica and Danielle. (Note: all names start with letter “D”). Graduated from Philippine Normal University with a degree of BSEE-HE (Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education major in Home Economics) 1972.

For how long you’ve been teaching?

I’ve been teaching since I graduated from university, got married in 1979, I continued teaching even when I came to Jeddah year 1984.

    What school in Jeddah?

I started with IPSJ (international Philippine School of Jeddah) teaching from grade 1 to Grade 6. Currently, I am teaching PE (physical Education) for girls from grade 1-4 in Al Wadi International School (British Curriculum).

Would you described briefly what is the difference between a multicultural foreign school as against to Philippine school? (on teacher point of view)

From my experiences (this is only my opinion) its behavioral differences… more of attitude problem than academic differences. Filipino students are more polite, respectful and easy to manage.

How would you describe yourself as a teacher?

Disciplinarian! The first and foremost that I teach to my students is self-discipline.

What is your strength and weaknesses as a teacher?

Discipline is my strength and my weakness? I am easily distracted!

Well, I guess it’s also a practice at home. What about your children? Tell me more about them.

My two sons are already working, my daughter Danica recently graduated from Southville Int. School and Colleges with a degree of BS in Nursing. My youngest is in her 2nd year of BS in Tourism.

(At this point of interview, I felt she is getting emotional and overwhelmed by the facts).

It would be practically impossible for me to  describe her inner feelings as a parent of these children (adjectives…out of my mind) proud parents as they are, or should I say, a proud mom! She confided her difficulties while her husband was away working , She was left alone with her son, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy . On top of that, she still has to work to help augment their needs financially.

(Cerebral palsy (CP) is an umbrella term encompassing a group of non-progressive, non-contagious motor conditions that cause physical disability inhuman development, chiefly in the various areas of body movement.)

Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the motor control centers of the developing brain and can occur during pregnancy, during childbirth or after birth up to about age three.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerebral_palsy

At the time of delivery, she was told , her baby did not cry and oxygen was given immediately. (I guess, there wasn’t enough oxygen to reached the brain).

When he was growing up, at three years old,she noticed, he can’t crawl or walk like any other child of his age, this prompted her to seek medical attention.

    Did you stop working?

No, I didn’t, I have to help my husband, my son needs regular medical attention, and we practically stay more in the hospital than any other place. Then, we move to Jeddah, searched for another treatment. He had surgery in his leg so he can walk better. Continuous physical therapy was needed and done. Thanks God, he was alright. He grew up normally even played basketball.

As she continues to unlock her other sufferings (like many of us…financial, lack of extended family support, homesickness etc.) her tears rolls down, trying to control herself (and myself too) she gives me a smile and said, let’s move on to other aspect…Beauty”!

All right, tissue please! Whoa, what a moment, I admire her courage and perseverance.

“The best conversations with mothers always take place in silence, when only the heart speaks. “ ~Carrie Latet

Are there any beauty secrets that you can share? Any things that you can’t do without? What are the things that you love to shop and buy?

I don’t shop for myself, I think of my children first (mothers!)Oh well, SUNBLOCK 35SPF, even I am inside my home, we should protect our face from the lights in our house. I also use moisturizer every day under the sunblock cream. At night, I use egg white, so my skin feels tight and smooth.

It’s like egg white mask! There you go ladies, another secret unveiled!

  • A woman with a water jug :-/

    a woman with a jug

I was looking for my cheque book to pay the house rent, I came across this old picture of mine taken in Kan Zaman Restaurant 1993 ,Amman, Jordan. It’s an old farm-house converted into classical arabic restaurant.

I wonder, why i was carrying a jug on my head? Tourist curiosity? ha ha ha

Well, I went into research hmmm…and found a famous painting by J. Vermeer, “a young woman with a water jug “or lets say a pitcher in her hand.http://www.terraingallery.org/Vermeer-Woman-Jug-JJ-RJ.htm

Vermeer’s Young woman with a water jug – and WHAT MEN AND WOMEN ARE HOPING FOR MARRIAGE by Julie and Robert Jensen.

Aesthetic realism shows that the questions of marriage are aesthetic questions, answered in art.

Though we felt we needed each other, we also resented each other, because too much we used our care for each other to put the rest of the world aside. In his 1964 lecture, The Furious Aesthetics of Marriage, Eli Siegel explains:

To marry a person has been, in the history of love and marriage, the finding of a shelter against the world as unpleasant….Love, in other words, can be a means of shelter from a unkind world,…or it can be a means of intensifying, affirming, extending, subtilizing a care for the world.

Vermeer’s purpose, as he looked at this woman, was to use her as a means of “intensifying, affirming, extending, subtilizing a care for the world.”

I am not sure, if you continued reading the article but let me do my realistic (aesthetic) interpretation of my picture, whether i am an artist or not.

I think every woman carries a water jug , the JUG represents the multifunction existence of a woman.Ladies can juggle task (multi tasking), work for longer hours and yet when she comes home every one expect her to bring home dinner! She is very delicate and soft but noticed her other hand on her waist, it resemble strength and balance but how long do you think she can carry the jug?

WATER represents the flow of life.Hmmm, I wonder whether it is cold or hot? Probably when she is mad , she carries hot water! 😦  It is up to her to carry the weight or let someone carry it for her or look for someone to help her. She can carry it empty, half empty, half full or full.

yey! What i am talking about?

Ladies, would you help me out?
